Mandleve - South Africa's Greatest Tusker
Mandleve died in 1992 and was truly a great tusker. In fact his tusks were the greatest of them all. His name means “ear” in Tsonga. He spent his life roaming the thorny thickets of Southwestern Kruger National Park in South Africa. His two tusks weighed 152lbs and 161lbs apiece taking the record for Kruger’s heaviest ivory. In late 1993 Mandleve’s skeleton was found with tusks intact. They were removed and are now on display at the Letaba Elephant Hall in South Africa.
