Florida is home to so many unique and special birds. I walk the beach on Casey Key every day as a licensed “Turtle Lady”, so I am lucky to see the wonderful bird life here. We also have the most spectacular sunrises, especially if a storm is in the area. I wanted to unite the colorful birds with the incoming stormy daybreak.
There are three different species of ibis in North America, having seen them all, I wanted to incorporate them in this painting. The white ibis is the most common of the ibis, we see them everywhere including our front lawn. The glossy ibis (dark ibis) is also native to this area, always hunting for grubs in the grasses. The scarlet ibis (red) is the rare bird in this part of Florida. I have seen them in a local rookery and on Sanibel Island. So, I combined all three make the flight of the ibis.
In this, and all of my paintings I have hidden my husband’s and my initials, (J+S) somewhere in the piece. See if you can find them.
